Outlaws and Legends

March 31 and April 1 are the dates of a music festival called Outlaws and Legends. Quite a big local gala, it has been featured in Texas Monthly, Texas Highways and other publications. Attending the concerts is a nice way to relax and celebrate Texas Independence Day. A few of the performing artists scheduled for this year’s event include Lee Ann Womack, Cody Johnson, Mark Chesnutt and Kevin Fowler.

Sweetwater Rattlesnake Roundup

Where else but in West Texas can you attend a rattlesnake parade and watch a snake-eating contest! On March 10 to 12, Sweetwater will host the World’s Largest Rattlesnake Roundup, an event that will also include a carnival, guided hunts, dance and cook-off. It will be held at the Nolan County Coliseum at 1699 Cypress in Sweetwater.

Abilene’s Historic Paramount Theatre

The Paramount Theatre in Abilene keeps the past alive in a beautiful way. Built in 1930 and restored in 1986, it exudes the grandeur of the early days of the motion picture industry.

It’s a Wonderful Life

A Christmas favorite that stars James Stewart and Donna Reed, It’s a Wonderful Life will be playing on December 9 and 10. Tickets are $6 for adults and $5 for adults and children. The Friday showtime is at 7:30 p.m., and the Saturday showtimes are at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Christmas Music

The community will be offering the following music performances this month:

  • On December 13, the Abilene Community Band will present a Christmas Concert. Starting time is 7:30 p.m., and admission is free.
  • The Messiah, Handel’s renowned masterpiece, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on December 18. Seats are reserved at $16.
  • Flying J Wranglers will perform their White Mountain Christmas Concert on December 20. The show starts at 7 p.m., and admission is $20 for adults and $15 for children.

Calamity Jane

Another fabulous old movie, Calamity Jane will be playing on January 31. Most people will fondly remember this western classic that stars Doris Day. It starts at 7:30 p.m., and admission is $6 for adults and $5 for adults and children

If you love classic cars, make plans to attend the 34th Annual Cruise Night on October 1. This family-friendly event involves a cruise of vintage cars along with live entertainment and dancing. The cruise will take place on North 1st Street from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and the dance will be held downtown from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is free.

Trade Days of West Texas

On the second weekend of every month, Abilene residents and visitors can shop until they drop at Trade Days of West Texas. You can browse through antique, vintage and handmade merchandise as well as pick up snacks from food trucks. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Parking and admission is free. The next scheduled event is on October 7 to 9.

Art Walk

On the second Thursday of every month, the cultural district in downtown Abilene comes alive. People from neighboring areas of the state flock to the city to enjoy galleries, museums, shops and restaurants. The art walk is free, and hours are from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. October 13 is the date of next month’s gala.

Get Wild at the Abilene Zoo

Frontier Texas

Paramount Theatre
