Early-March to mid-April is arguably the best time to plan a camping trip to Rusk, as it is when nature puts on its annual show in the garden capital of Texas – Nacogdoches.

Pick up a trail map at the Visitor’s Center at 200 E. Main Street, and drive down the 25 glorious miles of routes that meander through the town. The routes are divided into three trails, and each one is a visual feast.

More than 7,000 of the vibrant flowers can be seen at Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University. Every Saturday afternoon during the season, you can enjoy a free guided tour.

Shop and Stroll

An event associated with azalea time, Shop and Stroll is scheduled for March 25. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., visitors can walk around downtown Nacogdoches and drop into shops such as Liberty Bell, Polka Dotz and Twigs and Tin.

Farmers’ Market Spring Fling

If you’re in town on April 8, don’t miss the Spring Fling Farmers Market. The market is open every Saturday morning in the historic downtown area at 108 Pearl Street, but the spring event should be extra special.

If high speeds aren’t your cup of tea, the Original Dolphin Watch is a great alternative. These educational trips offer close-up looks at charming creatures of the sea — dolphins, which makes the rides enjoyable for the whole family. Boats depart at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., and tickets are $10 for adults and children.
