Remembering Buddy Holly

February 3 is the 58th anniversary of the plane crash that claimed the life of Buddy Holley, Lubbock’s favorite son. The Buddy Holly Center will commemorate the occasion with a special day of events.



From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., a 90-minute documentary of the music legend will be shown in the Fine Arts Gallery. It tells the story of the man whose songwriting and singing style impacted rock-and-roll and country music. Admission is free.

If weather permits, a museum curator will conduct guided trolley tours of local landmarks that played a role in Holly’s career. Tour times are 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and admission is $5.

The day also includes hands-on activities for all ages, including the opportunity for kids to touch musical instruments. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Cirque Eloize Saloon

On February 10 and 11, the Civic Center Theatre will present the Cirque Eloize Saloon. This unique tale is a captivating mix of acrobatics, music, theater and comedy. It is Texas entertainment at its finest. Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets range from $40 to $60. The address is 1501 Mac Davis Lane.

Oaklawn Opry

Saturday nights are special in Texarkana because of the Oaklawn Opry, which provides wholesome family music shows every week.

While it specializes in traditional country songs, it also includes a little Gospel, old-time rock ‘n roll, bluegrass and comedy. The 25th Anniversary Show will be held on February 11, so you can expect quite a performance.

Jordan World Circus

On February 20, the Jordan World Circus will be in town. This fun family event will involve awesome aerial acts and animal performances. Children can even ride or pet some of the critters.

Perot Theatre Events

The Perot Theatre is an absolutely beautiful venue for an array of local entertainment. Built in 1924, the historic building has been restored to its original magnificence. The following events are on the calendar for the next couple of months:

  • On January 28, the classic story of The Call of the Wild will enfold on stage. The tale of adventure and survival is heartbreaking and sometimes funny. Showtime is at 2 p.m.
  • The local thespians will present the off-Broadway play Pump Boys and Dinettes on February 11. It combines country and bluegrass music with foot stomping fun. Theatergoers can choose from the 3 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. show.
  • On March 26, the Quebe Sisters will perform. The three women are fiddling champions as well as singers who are pros in an array of genres. The concert starts at 3 p.m.

The New Year’s resolutions people make in January often involve fitness. On January 21, a health expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sunset Mall. It will be a good opportunity to get some health screenings free of charge.

Bastrop First Friday Art Walk

Like many cities and towns across the country, Bastrop has an art walk on one evening every month.

The event on the first Friday is an opportunity to browse through galleries and shops, as well as listen to live music and dine.
