January competitions include the following:

  • The Wichita Falls Wildcats ice hockey team will play the Shreveport Mudbugs on January 6 and 7. The venue is Kay Yeager Coliseum, and tickets range from $7 to $15.
  • Both the Men’s’ and Women’s’ basketball teams from Midwestern State University have some home games scheduled during the coming weeks. The venue is D. L. Ligon Coliseum, and tickets range from $3 to $8.

Ice Skating

Founded in 1913, the Thomas Mercantile is a quaint, charming gift shop that will take you back in time in the most enjoyable way. Terry Thomas-Smith, the current owner, is the fourth generation of the family to operate the enterprise. You’ll be warmly welcomed as you come in and browse through an array of gift items that include candles, lotions, soaps, jewelry accessories and food items.

Jack Thomas, the owner’s father, is a WWII POW who sits on the porch and greets patrons. Within the store, you’re likely to see Kiku Thomas, the owner’s aunt, whose handmade pillowcases and aprons are available for purchase.

  • The Jasper County Historical Museum houses wartime artifacts, treasured family heirlooms and information about area legends. You’ll find it at 165 Main Street.
  • A lovely example of Victorian architecture, the Beaty Orton House offers tours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday through Friday. The location is the corner of Water Street and Main Street.
  • You can browse through fire exhibits from different periods at the Jasper County Fire Museum. It is inside the Fire Hall.
  • The bell that tolls the hours at the Jasper County Courthouse is the same one that tolled the hours in the original clock tower that was constructed in 1890. Its address is 121 N. Austin.

Miracle on 34th Street

We all treasure warm-hearted Christmas movies and stories that have been a part of the American holiday landscape for decades. One example is Miracle on 34th Street, a play that you can enjoy at the Crighton Theatre. The main character is Kris Kringle, an elderly man in a retirement home who gets a Santa job at Macy’s. Showtimes are at 8 p.m. on Friday and at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets range from $15 to $22.

Montgomery County’s Got Talent

On January 13 at the Crighton Theatre, people from the area will compete in a talent show. At 7:30 p.m., musicians, singers, dancers and poets will entertain an audience, and prizes will be awarded to the top three winners. Tickets may be purchased online starting December 19.

Arlington Sporting Events

Visitors to the DFW area can take in Dallas Cowboys’ football games or college basketball games in December. If you are a sports fan, you may want to also reserve seats at the Cotton Bowl in January.

The Cowboys will play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on December 18 and the Detroit Lyons on December 26 at AT&T Stadium. If you prefer basketball, you can watch the Lady Mavericks or Dallas Mavericks play home games at College Park Center UTA.

College football fans will have a great time at the Cotton Bowl on January 2 at AT&T Stadium, where Western Michigan will battle No. 8 Wisconsin. Kickoff time is at noon. Tickets may be purchased here.
