Rusk KOA is in a community that is home to the Texas State Railroad, a conveyance that is considered a true Texas treasure. Established in 1881, this historic train provides a nostalgic but delightful step back in time to the days when rail travel was is its heyday. So hop onboard this steam and diesel train that will take you on a most pleasant excursion through the scenic Piney Woods of Texas. The train runs between Rusk and Palestine and is of 1 1/2 hours duration.
The depot has an interesting history as well, reminding you of days of yore when people waited in such places to either send off loved ones on a journey or to greet them upon their return. In decades past, townsfolk would sometimes get their kicks by going to the local depot and watching who got on and who got off the train.
Many people have only experienced rail travel vicariously through reading books. Now is your chance to get a real taste of it. As one enthusiastic patron on Trip Advisor stated, it is worth the trip just to sit on the bench and watch the giant engine come puffing in.
