The area around San Angelo KOA has some very unusual and interesting attractions that visitors will enjoy touring. About a half hour’s drive away in Christoval is Mt. Carmel Hermitage, which is a community of men devoting their lives to prayer, silence and solitude for the benefit of the Church and salvation of the world. This colony follows the original Carmelite rule, living in separate abodes around a central chapel. Visiting hours are from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m. daily.
Less than an hour’s drive away is Paint Rock Excursions, one of the foremost pictograph sites in the country. Visitors can view more than 1,600 ancient paintings along a limestone bluff close to the Concho River.
Fort McKavitt is 85 miles away, but history buffs will feel that it is worth the trip. The site was established by the country’s military in 1852 to protect frontier settlers and travelers in the area. Admission is $3 for adults and the fort is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
