Bastrop River of Lights

river of lightsEvery night through New Year’s Eve, campers from Bastrop / SE Austin / Colorado River KOA can enjoy the River of Lights, which is 1 ½ miles of 120 lighted displays and music. Visitors can choose to either drive or walk along the river trail, and on most nights nonprofit groups will be available to sell hot chocolate, cookies and holiday treats.

The First Baptist Church will have a beautiful candlelight worship service at 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Join the locals in this joyous celebration of Christ’s birth.

Those who choose not to cook on Christmas Day can enjoy a fabulous buffet at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort. Whether you prefer breakfast items like French toast and made-to-order omelets or opt for dinner fare like butternut squash soup and roasted garlic mashed potatoes, you are sure to enjoy the broad array of offerings.

On a chilly winter’s evening what could be better than a steaming bowl of savory chili? On January 5 at 5 p.m., the American Legion in Bastrop will hold a chili cook-off, followed by music from New York Brian.

Live Nativity

live nativityCampers at Lake Livingston / Onalaska KOA can enjoy a live nativity on December23 at First United Methodist Church in nearby Livingston. Everyone is invited for dinner in the fellowship hall at 5 p.m. followed by the nativity and music in the courtyard. Also, on Christmas Eve at 5 p.m., 7 p.m., and 11 p.m., the church will have candlelight worship services.

When you are in Livingston on a weekday, a visit to the Polk County Museum would be an interesting outing. The outstanding exhibits involve different eras in the history of Texas, including the Indian and pioneer days, along with the Civil War.

Stop for a bite to eat in Pueblo Viejo in Livingston, a Tex-Mex restaurant with excellent food. The eatery has some unique menu items

December Events

ChristmasChristmas cheer is in the air, as the community has several holiday events coming up that campers at Burkburnett / Wichita Falls KOA will enjoy. Throughout the month, the Museum of North Texas History will present “Texas Christmas Past,” an exhibit that will take visitors down memory lane.

River Bend Nature Center will be aglow with more than 60,000 lights on silhouettes of galloping reindeer, pecking woodpeckers and other critters. After seeing the display, stop at the Candy Cane Café for hot chocolate and smores.

Beginning December 7 and continuing all month, MSU – Burns will be the scene of Fantasy of Lights, a collection of 34 lighted animated displays. The beautiful attraction draws thousands of visitors every year.

Miracle on 34th Street is a much loved holiday classic that will be live on stage from December 7 to December 22. Another wonderful event is an evening of Christmas music on December 8 by the Wichita Falls Symphony and local choirs. Also, don’t miss the Christmas Tour of Homes on December 11.
